An ABC certified fitter-orthotics is a health care professional who is specifically educated and trained
in the provision of certain orthoses. This includes patient assessment, formulation of a treatment plan,
implementation of the treatment plan, follow-up and practice management. An ABC certified fitter orthotics
is competent to practice orthotics within a scope of practice that is specific to fitting certain
custom fitted, prefabricated and off-the-shelf orthoses as described below:
•Cervical orthoses, except those used to treat an unstable cervical condition
•Prefabricated orthoses for the upper and lower extremities, except for the following:
those used in the initial and/or acute treatment of long bone fractures and dislocations,
therapeutic (diabetic) shoes/inserts and functional electrical stimulation orthoses (e.g.
•Prefabricated spinal orthoses, except those used in the treatment of scoliosis or unstable
spinal conditions, or halo cervical orthoses
•Pressure gradient garments
This is an approved entry-level educational program for any individual wishing to become an American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics (ABC). Upon successful completion of this course, student(s) are eligible to apply for ABC Certification at the following website: www.abcop.org Candidates who have met the ABC requirements and passed the certification exam will be awarded the Certified Fitter-orthotics (CFo) credential.
The Orthotic Fitters course consists of 24 hours online (which can be started the next day after registration) and 16 hours of clinical participation (lab), which equals to a total of 40 hours of instructions. This course also includes custom molded shoe which is mandatory in the state of Florida.
For the online portion of this class, an exam is included after the modules. Upon successful completion of this online class, it is required that student(s) will need to print their certificate of completion and bring it with them to the fitting lab. (Please Note: The online portion needs to be completed prior to attending the lab portion of this course.The 40 Contact Hour certificate for this course will be handed out at the end of the clinical lab.)
