Abstract: This 32-hour I.V. Therapy Education Program (often referred to as “IV Certification”) will provide nurses and post-graduate nursing students with a basic knowledge of I.V. therapy practice. This program meets the 30-hour I.V. therapy education requirement set forth in the FBON Nurse Practice Act (Chapter 64B9-12.004) for LPN's practicing I.V. Therapy in the State of Florida, including all required content and mandatory hands-on practice. RN’s are encouraged to complete the program as a refresher; or as a primer for new RN’s.
Course Content: Includes current standards of practice, a venous access device review (including 6 hours of central line education), venipuncture techniques, I.V. medication administration and fluid management, a review of nutritional solutions, management of difficult I.V. insertions, legal aspects and vascular access protocols.
This program includes a video/slide presentation given by Kay Coulter, CRNI, VA-BC, a video of a live peripheral IV catheter insertion demonstration and videos of 2 live implanted venous port access (and de-access) demonstrations, a printable workbook (100+ pages) containing an additional 8 hours of independent study/reading, a post test following each chapter, and a simulated IV Lab / hands-on skills practice session / observation (IV kit included).

IV Skills Lab Instructor: Elsie Barlow
- Please read: This selection is for the IV Therapy 32-Hour Blended Course with the 4-hour lab at which students will receive in-person, hands-on simulated training from a qualified instructor. There will be a question and answer session related to the online content, a peripheral IV catheter insertion / IV medication and fluid administration procedure demonstration, a central venous catheter dressing change / blood draw procedure demonstration, and hands-on simulated skills practice / observation.
- This course must be followed by supervised practice in the clinical setting to verify clinical competence, which is the responsibility of each employing institution. Per Florida Board of Nursing Rule for Administration of Intravenous Therapy By Licensed Practical Nurses (Chapter 64B9-12.005(5) Clinical Competence) “this course must be followed by supervised clinical practice in IV therapy as needed to demonstrate clinical competence. Verification of clinical competence shall be the responsibility of each institution employing a LPN based on institutional protocol. Such verification shall be given through a signed statement of a Florida licensed Registered Nurse”.
NOTE: The online course MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE IV LAB.
